When I get to my room, it is full of boys. I really need to get a lock for my door.

‘What was it like?’ Gideon asks. He has only just reached an age where kissing girls is something that he might be interested in. But he still isn’t quite sure about it. The fear of girl germs is probably still prominent in the back of his mind.

Andrew is pretending that he doesn’t really want to hear, but he definitely does. Kissing girls is the only thing he’s interested in.

I consider kicking them out and refusing to tell them anything, but their faces are so hopeful I can’t do it.

‘It was great,’ I say. ‘It was really great.’

It’s not quite the amount of detail I think they were hoping for, but the little ones seem satisfied, and Andrew takes them out to bed.

‘I’m happy for you,’ Gideon says, patting me on the shoulder. What a guy.

One thing I can tell you about my brothers: as much as they annoy me by stealing my stuff, accosting my girlfriend at the door and never giving me any privacy, they are pretty good eggs.

‘Of course, I knew something bad was going to

happen. Ask anyone and they will tell you: I’m a little

bit psychic. Nothing too specific just yet, but I could

tell from the way the sky looked this morning that

today was not going to be a good day.’ — Sally, Year
